This is a catalogue of older ideas that don’t fit into my current style of making, though many of the pieces contain threads that I have carried forward in some way.
Pitcher Plant
Pitcher Plant (2025) was a sculpture I built as part of a push to incorporate more handbuilt elements and natural themes into my work. I really enjoyed the slowness of coiling the clay up layer by layer. I plan to draw from the aesthetics of carnivorous plants like this in the future, maybe in a less literal way. This piece is featured on the Washington Clay Arts 2026 poster.
Simorgh
Simorgh (2024) is a porcelain tea set carved with imagery from an old Persian fable, The Conference of the Birds. In the story, a flock of birds go on a quest across seven valleys to find the tree of life. There, they hope to find the Simorgh, a mystical bird who might grant them enlightenment. The story ends in a joke and a moral about reflecting on oneself.
This story reminds me of my family, who pass down volumes in the way of lessons and laughter while pouring tea for one another. This set of pots is an homage to the value of passing down culture in this way, and an artifact of the habits and histories of my family.
This series of interchangeable lamps was part of a group exhibition in the fall of 2024 to commemorate the end of the residency program I participated in at the Clay Corner, accompanied by an artist’s talk I gave on the development of my featured work. The lamp consists of several ceramic elements in muted blue tones, as well as some pops of vibrant red. These pieces can be arranged in layers on the simple pendant bulb, resulting in an interactive and customizable piece of lighting. The largest piece of the lamp is also the most detailed, consisting of a subtle variation in texture on the inside and darker contrasting tones on the outside that play with light and shadow.
